INTRODUCTION
Named after Canada’s seventh prime minister, Sir Wilfred Laurier Park in Devonshire Village—a new subdivision of Transcona in Winnipeg—boasts a children’s playground and dog park alongside 600-metres of trails. The Nadi Group collaborated with engineers, the City of Winnipeg and native plant species specialists to design the low-maintenance public park.
PROJECT SUMMARY
At 1.2-acres, we divided the dog park into two areas: one for small dogs and one for large dogs, offering every pup the opportunity to feel safe when they're off-leash. We designed Flamingo Crossing trail (an asphalt path), which connects Devonshire Village to the park and then connects further to the Transcona Trail, to provide access to the park path for healthy living activities and community green space. For the playground, we went with an insect theme, including a walking stick ladder and a large fly shelter for kids to enjoy. Purple benches, situated around the playground, add an extra layer of playfulness to the space.
OUR ROLE
The Nadi Group provided landscape architecture services, and managed and oversaw construction of the park. The project was completed in the fall of 2018.
