Introduction

Nadi Group submitted an entry for a Winnipeg General Strike Design Competition and an interpretation installation at the corner of Lily Street and Market Avenue.

Project Summary

To hold the line, to halt production, to keep strong and band together for a cause, the City’s Labor force demonstrated this during the 1919 strike and this is reflected in the proposed memorial. The memorial is made of two elements: a wooden beam and a metal “blade”, these materials evoke a connection to the first groups of laborers to strike: the metal and building trades. The wood being cut by a “blade” but the work has halted, the piece has stopped in time as the workers stopped to strike.

This honest gesture of stopping awakens the mind to contemplate and find respect for the tenacious acts of the labor force that slowed the city. It kindles thoughts of respect and pride in humanity’s ability to stand together in times of inequity. It creates a place to remember and form memories inspired by the act of this stopped moment in time.
